9 May—Michael Peloquin came from ritzy Paradise Valley, Arizona, to august Paradise, Connecticut, (i.e., Litchfield) 20 years ago, taking over a house on North Street that had once been a mortuary. Reportedly having originated in Hartford, he was (had been?) a property developer in the Phoenix area.

The Monitor can’t decide how to refer to Michael Peloquin because in Litchfield he has chosen to be known variously as a former judge and a doctor, neither of which can be verified. Because of the type of hat he normally wears around town, Peloquin is also rather sarcastically known as the cowboy. [It must be noted that the editor has two broad-brimmed hats he bought in Arizona and has been sarcastically called Tex—perhaps with some mistaken allusion to Rosenberg, Texas.]

Until last year, Peloquin was a motor-vehicle tax scofflaw in Connecticut because for years he had neglected to register his black Mercedes-Benz that had worn a single Arizona license plate, as only one is required in that state. It’s assumed but not verified that the Benz had been duly registered and insured in Arizona. It can’t be reported with any certainty, on the other hand, that the Benz has ever been in Arizona.

Peloquin had in fact appealed the assessment in Litchfield but failed to show up at the Board of Assessment Appeals to plead his case last March. Not quite in his defense, Peloquin was only one of many motor-vehicle tax scofflaws in Connecticut, which is one of about half the states that imprudently allow municipalities to tax motor vehicles.
