Don’t eat veal

10 June—As you dive into your veal cutlet, veal parmigiana, or blanquette de veau consider this:

► Veal is the meat from a cruelly treated calf that never had a chance. Dairy cows must give birth in order to continue producing milk. But their male offspring are of little or no value to dairy farmers, so the unfortunate little creatures are destined for lifelong maltreatment followed by inhumane slaughter.

► Veal calves are confined for life in small crates that are barely larger than their own tortured little bodies. (A common practice on factory farms.)

► The little veal calves cannot walk or even turn around in those torture crates. And they’re often as not kept in the dark. (A common practice on factory farms.)

► Veal calves are deliberately kept anemic in order to obtain the light-colored meat that’s sold as “milk-fed” veal.

► Veal calves are deprived of drinking water while being forced to drink liquid feed laced with drugs in order to make them gain weight.

► Being denied solid food, the factory-farmed little veal calves suffer chronic diarrhea.

► A veal calf is raised until he’s 20 weeks of age and weighs perhaps 450 pounds before he’s put out of his undeserved, unrelenting misery.

► Contrary to common belief, dairy products are not a nutritional requirement for human beings or dogs; and most cats are lactose intolerant.

► Just like plant-based meats, plant-based dairy products taste as good as—and many are even more nutritious than—animal-based products . . .
