3 April—The momentous scoop came in on big cat feet from an unimpeachable source late Sunday afternoon. And here it is, without our usual verbiage: The mascot for nascent Regional School District 20 has just been chosen by the democratic process.
It is to be the bobcat! Repeat: Bobcat! And again: Bobcat!
The Monitor’s first idea to celebrate the great event was to publish a didactic disquisition on the Lynx rufus, or red lynx, as the bobcat is evidently known somewhere, because of its binomial name. But then it occurred to the editorial bored that short-lived Georges Seurat had meticulously painted, about a century-and-a-half ago, a striking portrait of a bobcat that’s now in the private collection of his only great grand-nephew, Georges Seurat III. Don’t ask how we knew about it.
In all events, we texted Trey Seurat, in his 90s, in Paris, in French. And two hours later, (notre très vieil ami—vraiment très vieux) texted us a high-resolution photo of his great grand-uncle’s little, rarely seen masterpiece “Un lynx roux un dimanche après-midi à l’Île de la Grande Jatte.”
Without further ado, then, here’s George Seurat’s celebration of Region 20-to-be’s mascot-to-be. And, yes, bobcats do have tails.
