4 April—Getting back to stupid, stupid, stupid, take Connecticut baby bonds. Please. They’re not to be confused with early U.S. savings bonds, which were popularly called “baby bonds,” or corporate bonds with a par value of less than $1,000. The stupid baby bonds were enacted by the Connecticut General Assembly’s chronically irresponsible Democrat majority in 2021 as yet another strategy for buying votes—and crawling into headlines by being the very first misguided state to commit that particular feel-good (of course) and embarrassing abomination.
But Connecticut isn’t the first baby bonder by any means. The United Kingdom’s effort, for one, the Child Trust Fund, flopped shortly after it was enacted by the moribund Labour (pseudo-socialist) government in the early days of this century. On the other hand, Hungarian babies are still being given tax-free bonds of minimal value by autocratic Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s disgracefully compliant government in Budapest.
Back in Connecticut, the stupid, stupid, stupid plan was—and evidently still is—for the state government to throw $3,200 of taxpayer money into an account for every baby born starting this July whose birth is covered by the state’s Medicaid program. They’re disproportionately minority children, of course, which is precisely why progressive panderers enthusiastically ran with the nonsensical plan.
The Connecticut Treasurer tells us that the taxpayer-provided blood money is expected to balloon into at least $10,635 by the time the lucky impoverished brats turn 18. At that time they’re supposed be able to use the underwhelming windfall for educational expenses, buying a home, investing in a business, or saving for retirement.
Yeah, right. Does ten grand cover the cost of community college even now? House downpayment? And do the state’s progressive dreamer-whores really think that the sweet-eighteen money will be used constructively at all? The answers are, “does it matter?” and “why should they care?”
(And just for the fun of it, what kind of businesses are the newly minted adults most likely to invest in? One cynical guess.)
Back in 2007, New York carpetbagging Senator Hillary Clinton (remember her, the virtueless virago responsible for President Trump and President Biden?), pandering for the Democratic presidential nomination that Barack Obama won, had recklessly proposed giving every baby born in the U.S.A. $5,000 to start an account to use for college tuition. That’s every baby, not just the ones that came out of indigent mommies. And what if they all didn’t want to go to college? It never got that far, because, as usual, Hillary was just blowing smoke; her campaign never even tried to provide details.
The good news for Connecticut is that nothing has yet been done to actually get the baby bonds boondoggle going. As far as anyone knows, the Lamont administration has no plans to allocate bonding for the baby bonds in the near future. The better news is that Ned’s satraps have been working behind the scenes to stall the program.
But unless some miracle happens, Connecticut’s non-indigent will be bonding indigent babies before too long. It’s Connecticut, after all, mismanaged by one party far too long. So you can count on it . . .
