22 October—It looks like Donald Trump is going to win yet again. Fifteen months too late, the Congressional House Select Committee to Prolong the Political Opportunism of Keeping the Invasion of the United States Capitol Before the Voters (the Silly Committee) yesterday decided to subpoena Trump. At long last. And for all the good it will do.
The former scumbag-in-chief’s battery of lawyers could try to run out the clock, hoping for a Republican House majority in the 118th Congress that will most certainly kowtow to its corrupt messiah. I suspect they’re not counting on the Supreme Court majority Trump created, which, while certainly too dogmatic (just like the liberals), has shown itself to be considerably more principled than its creator.
Of course, another option is for Trump to simply notify the Silly Committee that he intends to stand on (or under) the Fifth Amendment on all issues, thereby precluding his testimony and production of documents. He likely wouldn’t even have to appear at a hearing. But he might anyway, if only to hurl invective in person at the committee members.
Even though the inference—confirmed by Trump himself before he copped the Fifth—is that anyone who cops the Fifth is guilty, it’s not allowed to be used as evidence in criminal prosecution. And Trump’s cult of misfits wouldn’t give a damn anyway.
It’s possible, on the other hand, to get Trump to admit his manifold and manifest offenses against civility, decency, honesty, and just about everything else imaginable by promising him transactional immunity so that he couldn’t be prosecuted for all his high crimes and misdemeanors. But what fun would that be? After all, we know he’s guilty as sin and simply want to see him punished for his crimes. But if he could regale us with all of his nefarious deeds with immunity and impunity, think of how it would inflate his already overblown narcissistic ego . . .
