17 May—The New Republic is a left-leaning print and digital magazine that considers itself influential. In left-leaning circles, anyway. And, truth be told, it is influential. In right-leaning circles, too. Its stories are well written with a lefty bias, of course, to appeal to its left-leaning reader base and obviously raise the hackles of everybody else. For a few years in the early nineties, liberally libertarian conservative [sic] author and commentator Andrew Sullivan moved TNR, as it’s known, a little to the right, before moving on to other platforms.

TNR is among the best modern practitioners of good old-fashioned yellow journalism. To refresh your memory, yellow journalism (known as tabloid journalism in the UK) is the practice of using exaggerated, sensationalized, sometimes even misleading headlines and graphics to attract readers. It originated in the 1890s in the circulation war between Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst in New York. Its color designation comes from the “Yellow Kid” comic strip that was published in Pulitzer’s World until Hearst lured the cartoonist to his Journal.
