Presidential wisdom

25 January—Here are the signatures of four American presidents in order of service, top to bottom: George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt, and Donald Trump. The signers’ names are clearly discernible in all the signatures except the bottom one. That’s Trump’s. And—only for comparison, of course—the illegible signature right on top of that happens to be Adolf Hitler’s. No denying that Trump does it better.

So here are some random words of wisdom from the above signatories.

George Washington:

“I hold the maxim no less applicable to public than to private affairs, that honesty is the best policy.”

“I had always hoped that this land might become a safe & agreeable Asylum to the virtuous & persecuted part of mankind, to whatever nation they might belong.”

“A free people ought not only to be armed, but disciplined; to which end a uniform and well-digested plan is requisite.”

“Arbitrary power is most easily established on the ruins of liberty abused to licentiousness.”

“To contract new debts is not the way to pay old ones.”

Abraham Lincoln:

“I promise you that I shall unselfishly try to deal fairly with all men and all shades of opinion among our friends.”

“In the formation of my Cabinet, I shall aim as nearly as possible at perfection. Any man whom I may appoint to such a position, must be, as far as possible, like Caesar’s wife, pure and above suspicion, of unblemished reputation, and undoubted integrity.”

“I do not deny the possibility that the people may err in an election; but if they do, the true cure is in the next election.”

“I shall do nothing in malice. What I deal with is too vast for malicious dealing.”

Franklin Roosevelt:

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

“I never forget that I live in a house owned by all the American people and that I have been given their trust.”

“We must scrupulously guard the civil rights and civil liberties of all our citizens, whatever their background. We must remember that any oppression, any injustice, any hatred, is a wedge designed to attack our civilization.”

“They who seek to establish systems of government based on the regimentation of all human beings by a handful of individual rulers call this a new order. It is not new and it is not order.”

Adolf Hitler (translated, of course):

“If you win, you need not have to explain. If you lose, you should not be there to explain!”

“To conquer a nation, first disarm its citizens.”

“Humanitarianism is the expression of stupidity and cowardice.”

“No politician should ever let himself be photographed in a bathing suit.”

“Western democracy, as practiced today, is the forerunner of Marxism. In fact, the latter would be inconceivable without the former. Democracy is the breeding ground in which the bacilli of the Marxist world-pest can grow and spread.”

“The very first essential for success is a perpetually constant and regular employment of violence.”

“Kill, destroy, sack, tell lies. After victory nobody asks why.”

“I believe today that my conduct is in accordance with the will of the Almighty.”

Donald Trump:

“Do you mind if I sit back a little? Because your breath is very bad.”

“People love me. And you know what, I have been very successful. Everybody loves me.”

“I don’t like losers.”

“One of the key problems today is that politics is such a disgrace, good people don’t go into government.”

“I have a great relationship with the Mexican people.”

“I’ve always said, ‘If you need Viagra, you’re probably with the wrong girl.’”

“I actually don’t have a bad hairline.”

“When somebody challenges you, fight back. Be brutal, be tough.”

“I was saved by God to make America great again.”
