3 September—A particularly percipient new reader noticed that the Seal of the President of the United States in the sidebar (or before you get to the Daily Disquisition on a phone or tablet) isn’t. If the rest of you readers haven’t noticed, look again. The Monitor’s production geeks did a simple adjustment to make it the Seal of a Resident of the United States.
And don’t fail to notice that the motto on the toilet paper stuck in the eagle’s beak isn’t the good old national motto, E Pluribus Unum—Out of Many, One. Rather, it’s a reflection of the current state of the nation, Ex Uno Plures—Out of One, Many.
Now for other news. It’s de rigueur for politicians to visit disaster venues. No matter what the pols and their spinners may say, they do it primarily for publicity, public relations, press coverage, air time. They’ve got to show the voters that they care and want to help. Not that they don’t care or (probably) want to help, to be sure, but what they care about most is votes.
Visiting dignitaries who don’t do actual rescue, recovery, or clean-up work are just humongous hindrances. They and their entourages take up valuable space and resources that could better be used to do something of use.
So when America’s wannabe Hitler, Governor Ron DeSantis, refuses to join Joe Biden when the president is touring Florida disaster areas, Ron’s spinners make the perfectly valid point that “. . . so soon after impact, the security preparations alone that would go into setting up such a meeting would shut down ongoing recovery efforts.” Of course, he’s snubbing Old White Joe too. But when Ron is right, Ron is right.
On the other hand, when DeSantis makes the disaster rounds, what are he and his entourage doing to help? Really.
And House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has announced that, two weeks after Joe and Jill Biden visited Maui, he’ll do the same. Why? To take full advantage of the damage caused by the calamitous wildfires, of course, just for political advantage, such as it may be. They’re all damn whores. With apologies to whores.
And what doesn’t the press report about disaster junkets to resort areas? Taxpayers footing the bill for bigwigs’ vacations any way you look at it.
Before leaving Joe Biden, yesterday, in Live Oak, Florida (where he accomplished absolutely nothing of use), he proclaimed, “Nobody can deny the impact of climate crises—at least nobody intelligent can deny the impact of the climate crisis anymore. Just look around, around the nation and the world for that matter.”
The only question that comes to mind, then, is, what does Joe Biden know about intelligent people? Or intelligence . . .
