15 May—Connecticut left-wing radio is running commercials for a live performance by a weatherman and a politician, both of whom we’re supposed to know, titled “Getting politics out of climate change.” Good idea. But who put climate change—also known these days as global warming—in politics in the first place?
Climate change is a fact of life, a natural occurrence. Earth’s climate has been changing from hot to cold to hot to cold since it was formed, however that may have been accomplished. Even before God created Adam and Eve, whose wicked descendants started polluting the atmosphere with hydrocarbons in the guise of progress. For shame!
Old farts will remember that in the mid-20th century—roughly between 1940 and 1970—the climate worry du jour was global cooling, allegedly caused by atmospheric pollution blocking sunlight. Aerosol cans (patented in Norway in 1927 and in the United States four years later) were coming into general use and their gaseous detritus was thought to drift into the heavens where it caused sunlight to be reflected away from our planet, where it was needed to stave off another Ice Age. Horrors!
Then, in the 1970s, global warming became the climate worry du jour. It’s allegedly caused by carbon dioxide, generated by fossil fuel combustion, floating up into the ether, trapping the very heat that was supposed to have been reflected by aerosol pollution.
Aerosols are also guilty in global warming, mind you—although somewhat less than fossil fuels—as they’re thought to create holes in Earth’s ozone layer, thus allowing sunlight to further warm the poor globe.
Forget about natural factors causing or affecting climate change. They’re only for serious scientists. Politicians and alleged experts can’t (at the moment, anyway) do anything about natural phenomena like volcanic eruptions, variations in Earth’s orbit, and fluctuations in solar activity.
But politicians and alleged experts can—for their own purposes, of course—exploit the gullibility of the great unwashed. (It’s not just Trump who thrives on it.) So people must be to blame for global warming. Hence the climatic guilt trip we’re all supposed to be on. It must be said, by the way, that liberals are better at guilt trips than conservatives.
Climate change is a scientifically valid, proven fact; Earth’s climate has been changing since the beginning, whenever and however that may have been. Anthropogenic contributory causes, on the other hand, are merely consensus—perhaps no more than wishful thinking; the fact is, there has been no scientifically valid, irrefutable proof offered that human activity of any sort is responsible for global warming or cooling.
So it certainly would be appropriate to get politics out of climate change—because pols can’t do anything about it anyway . . .
