27 March—Connecticut Attorney General William Tong yesterday called Donald Trump “an unhinged aspiring dictator.” Is Tong kidding? Does he really think that Trump is an aspiring dictator? Doesn’t he realize that Trump is a full-fledged, securely entrenched, practicing dictator? But Tong is right on the mark about Trump being unhinged.
This time around, Tong is on the righteous warpath about Trump’s latest executive order, issued Tuesday, that amid a surfeit of verbiage reinforces the citizenship requirement for voting in federal elections and mandates proof of citizenship for voter registration. And this time Trump is absolutely on the right side (in terms of principle as well as political partisanship).
It’s common knowledge that only citizens can lawfully vote—in federal elections, anyway. But, while lying on voter registration forms is a criminal offense punishable by fine and imprisonment, voting officials are nevertheless not permitted by federal law to require or even request proof of citizenship. Of course that doesn’t make sense. But it’s part of the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA), also known as the Motor Voter Act (for reasons we won’t go into), that came into effect in 1995.
Democrats held majorities in the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives in 1993 and since Monica Lewinsky hadn’t yet blown in the White House, Democrat Willy Clinton was ready, willing, and eager to connive with his party by making it easier for undocumented and undocumentable people to vote for them. Isn’t that what Democracy is all about?
Frankly, the NVRA made registering and voting too easy. And, practically speaking, who knows how many non-citizens committed perjury and are thus registered voters and will be until they’re found out—which probably will be never.
So, for a change, good for Trump’s executive order tightening election security. It’s about time. Except it’s unenforceable because it’s illegal because only Congress can fiddle with election laws because only Congress can make election laws.
So why did Trump bother? Why does Trump do all sorts of illegal and otherwise stupid things?
So why doesn’t the bicameral Republican majority in Congress fix the NVRA and without a doubt get it signed by Trump? Easy. The Democrats in the Senate will block it because it’s bound to cost them votes of people who for whatever reasons can’t come up with birth certificates or naturalization papers or other proofs of citizenship.
Why do Democrats assume that non-citizens and illegals will vote for them anyway?
