Not Trump again!? No. Still . . .

4 May—This is the oath the President of the United States takes, as required by Article II of the Constitution: “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

There’s not much to it and considering the job, it’s not too much to ask of a president. And what it entails is pretty clear. Yet Donald Trump, who swore the oath twice, says—confesses? boasts?—on today’s “Meet the Press” that he doesn’t know whether he’s required to obey the Constitution.

The whole one-on-one interview with Kristen Welker recorded Friday at Trump’s Führerbunker in Palm Beach is worth watching, so here’s the link: https://www.nbcnews.com/meet-the-press/video/may-4-president-donald-trump-238871109815

You’ll see that when the Kristen asks Trump whether he believes he needs to uphold the due process clause of the Constitution, he answers, “I don’t know.” “I’m not a lawyer,” he insists, and passes the buck to his “brilliant lawyers.”

In Trump’s defense, the presidential oath doesn’t actually make any mention of upholding or obeying the Constitution. And preserving, protecting, and defending the Constitution may be beyond his ability. And it’s possible that he was crossing his fingers when he recited the oath anyway.

The gist of the interview is par for the course for Trump. He exaggerates, boasts, and outright lies throughout. He’s great and responsible for everything good and right, Joe Biden is senile and responsible for everything bad and wrong. When towards the beginning of the interview Kristen says something he doesn’t like, Trump sputters his standby about “such a dishonest interview.” But he doesn’t blow his top. In fact, he behaves himself pretty much like a grown-up should.

Trump calls doughty old Bernie Sanders “a nut job” but says he’s “still sharp.” He imagines “tremendous unity” among the Republican flunkies who are going to be vying for his job and dodges a direct answer about a third term. He has plans to tart up the White House—at his expense. Wink wink, nudge nudge. (After which he’d probably give the real estate to himself by executive order, to be turned into Mar-a-Lago DC. That’s what self-dealing is all about, after all.)

In all, then, Donald Trump shows himself to be what he is, a delusional, ignorant con man who happens to have conned a small majority of the voters in the last election to the detriment of the United States and the world.

But Trump does make one accurate observation towards the end of the interview, however obvious it may be: The Democrats are in disarray . . .
