MSG rallies then and now

27 October—On the night of 20 February 1939 the German American Bund, a pro-Hitler organization promoting Nazi propaganda in the United States (before World War II, of course) held a well-publicized “America First” rally at Madison Square Garden. That’s what it was called. It was billed as supporting “Americanism.” Of course. Isn’t everything?

A full-length portrait of George Washington surrounded by vertical stylized Stars-and-Stripes provided the mawkishly pseudo-patriotic backdrop. It’s worth noting that Washington was pictured as a general. We read that Nazi swastikas festooned the stage, but they appear to be mostly on the armbands of the militaristic goons.

The Garden that night was packed with over 20,000 enthusiastic Nazis and ignoramuses, mostly of Germanic extraction. But about 100,000 anti-Nazi counter-protesters rallied outside the Garden.

Among the celebrities at the Nazi rally was Charles Lindbergh. He’s the middle person in the picture below, showing three Americans making what may be the Nazi salute or possibly the purely American Bellamy salute, also known as the flag salute. The palm-out Bellamy salute had been created by James Upham to accompany the Pledge of Allegiance, written by Francis Bellamy in 1892, and was officially replaced by the hand-over-heart salute only at the end of 1942. For obvious reasons.

(Digression: The guy in the snazzy ice cream suit is U.S. Senator Burton Wheeler, a Democrat from Montana. He was a non-interventionist rather than an isolationist. Big deal. The woman is Kathleen Norris, a novelist and journalist. The three were members of the America First Committee.)

(Another digression: While Lindbergh’s ravings about Jews, other minorities, and race certainly weren’t politically correct even back then—and convinced President Franklin Roosevelt that Lucky Lindy was a Nazi—he insisted that he wasn’t a Nazi sympathizer at all. Lindbergh was, however, an isolationist, opposed to America’s involvement in foreign countries’ business, especially wars. He’d have come by that naturally, as his father, a Republican congressman, had been opposed to the Great War.)

Tonight Donald Trump will be holding a well-publicized, star-studded rally at the current iteration of Madison Square Garden. It promises to be a tedious affair with all the usual suspects like Trump himself, his kids, Rudolph Giuliani, Stephen Miller, and Elon Musk—and too many more—ranting ad nauseam. You can bet that the crowd at Trump’s rally will be the biggest, best, most beautiful ever. And that it will be a night of love.

Hillary Clinton bitches that Trump’s rally at Madison Square Garden will be a “reenactment” of the 1939 Nazi rally. With all fairness to Hillary and Trump, it’s obvious that she’s just being a sore loser. Like you know who.

And if Kamala’s keepers know what’s good for their candidate, they’ll keep Hillary away . . .
