21 September—Easily the most momentous news at home and abroad is the long-awaited Region 20 Branding: colors, type faces, renditions of the mascot, and all the important stuff that guarantees academic excellence.
As it happens, last autumn, before the nascent region’s mascot was chosen but a few months after The Monitor had devised and published the perfect name for the region, a bobcat started visiting the editorial offices. He (yes, most assuredly he) must have known his ilk would be chosen for the Region 20 mascot over turkey vultures. So naturally we denominated him Wil Magoo—the perfect name for the region.
Having consumed an almost certainly non-vegan breakfast, the bobcat Wil Magoo kindly agreed to pose for a de rigueur mascot portrait one morning in October. That’s the top picture. The Monitor was going to offer it to Wil Magoo Region Superintendent Chris Leone as an exemplar, a perfect model for the region’s stylized bobcat mascot.
And then yesterday, just as The Monitor’s executive editor was digesting breakfast and the email about the Region 20 Branding, who should come around and even pose by a license plate (a.k.a. marker in Connecticut) bearing his name? Well, his likely father’s name, anyway, for the bobkitty would more properly be Wil Magoo Jnr. That’s the bottom picture.
Talk about serendipity. Now the Wil Magoo Region has an actual living exemplar for the elementary school’s bobkitty mascot, though Wil Magoo Jnr prefers not to wear clothes . . .
