Litchfield pay update
21 August—On this day in 1911, Leonardo da Vinci’s oil-on-poplar portrait of Lisa del Giocondo, known at the time it was painted around 1504 as La Gioconda (a play on Lisa’s surname) and more recently as Mona Lisa (a play on Lisa’s forename) was stolen from the Louvre in Paris, where it had been on display since 1797 (except for a brief stay in Napoleon’s bedroom at the Tuileries Palace).
The thief was Vincenzo Peruggia, an Italian handyman at the Louvre who, after secreting the painting in his Paris apartment for two years, took it back to Italy, where he tried to sell it. For purely patriotic reasons, of course. Long story short, La Gioconda was hung back in the Louvre in 1914 and has remained there except during World War II, when the painting peregrinated around France to keep it out of Nazi clutches.
Not to take anything away from Master Leonardo, to be sure, but Mona Lisa is really an overhyped nothingburger. And the whole so-called fine art scene is absolutely ridiculous. Moreover, the valuation of art—and all collectibles—is positively ludicrous.

Thirty-nine years to the day after Mona Lisa had been stolen, the monolithic United Nations Secretariat building in New York City officially opened. I was incarcerated in a summer prison camp in Wingdale, New York, at the time, so I couldn’t attend the great event. The site, part of an area on the East River known as Turtle Bay, had contained the original Eberhard Faber pencil factory, slummy apartment buildings (none owned by Fred Trump, surprisingly), gas company offices, and slaughterhouses.
At least the United Nations development got rid of the slaughterhouses.
