Leora’s desperation

31 October—It’s no surprise that an editorial in this morning’s Republican-American endorses Leora Levy in the U.S. Senate race against Richie Blumenthal—mostly by excoriating Blumenthal rather than extolling Levy. All’s fair in sex and politics, so Leora is resorting to desperate tactics to slither into Richie’s seat. Like for instance really dirty dirt from over a half-century ago that Fox News dug up on Richie:

It seems that when Richie Blumenthal was at Riverdale Country School back in the sixties—it’s a liberal prep in the Bronx, alma mater of Jack and Bobby Kennedy, among other notables, and just down the road from Fieldston School—he was president of the student council. No surprise there, Richie always has been a go-getter. He could have been something had he not gone into politics. And he didn’t have to lie about serving in Vietnam.

But—trigger warning: don’t read to the end of this paragraph if you’re squeamish or politically correct—one of the fund-raising events that RSC held during Richie’s presidential tenure was a Slave Day. That’s right, a Slave Day. It was on 21 November 1962, a day after Joe Biden turned 20, a week before I did. Even typing that phrase disgusts me. (But which phrase?)

So what!? It was a fund-raising gimmick—and presumably, like most fund-raisers at private schools, Slave Day was eminently successful. It’s not like Richie was a bully at his military academy or raped a girl but was too drunk to remember.

But that’s not all, folks. And if you’re squeamish or politically correct, you know what not to do. Because in 1966, when Richie Blumenthal was an undergraduate at Harvard and wrote for the Harvard Crimson, the student newspaper, he had the sheer racist chutzpah to do a story titled “Summer School Project Set for Negro Students.”

Here’s a quote to prove Richie’s racist slant: “Twenty Negroes from Southern colleges will study here this summer under a new program organized jointly by Harvard, Yale, and Columbia . . . The purpose of the program, Dean Ford said last week, is to provide Negroes with the preparation they need to go on to graduate school, and to help them overcome problems of graduate school admission.”

Scurrilous racism pure and simple. And Richie had the gall to use that incriminating N-word “at least seven times,” as the morons at Fox put it.

Fox claims there was a debate at the time about whether Negro was a racist slur. If my memory serves me, I’d say the Fox morons were full of it—as they often (usually?) are. I had Negro friends and acquaintances back then who called themselves niggers—and probably didn’t capitalize the word.

Is that ancient non-racist, irrelevant crap on Richie Blumenthal all those Republican nitwits could come up with? And did Leora Levy really have to humiliate herself more than she’s already done in her desperate campaign? Didn’t she embarrass herself enough by kissing Trump’s ass to impress the imbeciles who gave her the nomination over a qualified candidate and possible winner in the general election?

I’m certainly not Richie Blumenthal’s greatest fan. But, given the broad who’s running against him, he deserves to be reelected . . .
