6 December—The paramount issue facing Goshen, Litchfield, Morris, Warren, and the world is whether, after the precedent-setting district consolidation next year, to rename the current Region 6 High School after a municipal golf course in Waterbury or a defunct motel in Morris. (The motel’s business probably went south when Aerotherm— later UOP Aerospace—executives were no longer around to utilize the convenient amatory facilities.)
Will the Region 20 high school be Western Hills after the golf course or Lakeview after the motel? It doesn’t really matter, because nobody will be using the name anyway. Think about it.
High schools, if not named to honor or otherwise commemorate or recognize worthy, famous, or generous people (or some few namesakes who exemplify all three adjectives), tend to take the names of the regions or neighborhoods they’re located in. So that takes us to a name for Regional School District 20, which is more likely to be used than a high school name.
Take Wamogo High School in the Wamogo regional district, Litchfield High School in the Litchfield town district, and Pomperaug High School in the Pomperaug regional district, for instance.
You must be thinking, then, the Western Hills district or the Lakeview district. In that case, Western Hills might be preferable to Lakeview for a district name. Of course, the Wil Magoo district beats ’em all, which is precisely why it’s never been seriously considered.
And no matter what name or names may be chosen through the direct democratic process, the high school will be “the high school” and the region’s phones will be answered something like “Region 20, may I help you?”
Now for issues of less moment: Are there any?
