Disastrous King Donald

21 June—It can’t be denied that Donald Trump’s previous administration was a disaster and his current administration is a catastrophe—not only for America, but for the world. Well, it can be denied, but so can the Holocaust. And you know the kind of misfits and morons who are Holocaust deniers.

Last Tuesday night, in a handsomely paid appearance in Hartford, Barack Obama, without mentioning Donald Trump even once however, lamented pointedly that the United States was dangerously close to autocracy. Of course Obama was dead wrong.

Because the United States notably achieved autocracy status last July when the misguided majority of the Supreme Court in Trump v. United States effectively transformed the thitherto law-bound, presumably punishable President of the United States into the omnipotent, essentially unpunishable King of America.

(It’s not unlikely that the four principled justices who screwed up—Chief Justice Roberts and Trump appointees Gorsuch, Kavanaugh, and Barrett—regret their cataclysmic misinterpretation of the Constitution. Corrupt justices Thomas and Alito, on the other hand . . . )

While the SCOTUS screw-up in theory made any president a king, then-incumbent Joe Biden had the integrity not to be crowned. Of course, it’s entirely possible he didn’t know what was going on and his care givers just couldn’t get their act together in the six months left in his presidential term.

In all events, Donald Trump is the first King of America. And we’ll all live to regret that our implicitly democratic republic has regressed to an explicitly autocratic monarchy . . .

[Footnote: The original Constitution nowhere mentions democracy nor the democratic process nor even the right to vote. The closest it comes is in establishing a representative form of government. James Madison, responsible for perhaps most of the original Constitution, while an ardent proponent of republican government, saw the potential dangers of democracy—including tyranny of the majority. His fear was well-founded.]
