Bongbong and Ketanji

30 June—Congratulations are in order for Bongbong and Ketanji on their respective inaugurations, Bongbong’s as Philippines president, Ketanji’s as a United States Supreme Court justice.

It’s hoped that Bongbong Marcos will be a better president than his thoroughgoing scumbag of a father, who was deposed in 1986 and fled to Hawaii with the family, but without Imelda’s 2,700 pairs of taxpayer-funded shoes. Even though Junior isn’t a lawyer like daddy, however, his curriculum vitae isn’t all that encouraging.

After attending a Black Monk public school (prep, to us) in England, followed by Oxford University, which he left without a degree, and Wharton in Philadelphia, which he also left without a degree, Bongbong went into politics in 1980. And, despite a notably checkered career in politics and business, now he’s president.

Sort of brings Donald Trump to mind. But, while the apple may not fall far from the tree, as in the case of the Trumps, maybe Bongbong has mended his ways and sought redemption like a good Benedictine-educated boy would be expected to do.

Ketanji, on the other hand, has no black marks against her that are worth writing about. Unless, of course, you view her from a conservative coign of vantage. Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson’s curriculum vitae is just plain impressive and squeaky clean. Sure, she did improv comedy at Harvard and protested against a Confederate battle flag, but her rulings on the DC district and circuit courts—even (especially?) the ones that were overturned—were generally right on the mark.

Some irrelevant but curious facts about and nevertheless relevant to Ketanji Brown Jackson: It’s irrelevant that her spouse is white; curious that the only other black justice’s spouse also happens to be white. Also curious that we never see it mentioned by right- or left-leaning media. Leave it to me.

With Ketanji Jackson now replacing Stephen Breyer on SCOTUS, the only liberal Supremes are the three women. Of course, that’s silly even to mention, because it’s well-known that politics and personal beliefs and gender and race and religion play absolutely no part in the appointment and confirmation of justices.

So it’s also silly to consider identity politics in the choice of SCOTUS justices, in spite of poor old Joe Biden. But all three female Supremes represent perceived minorities: Ketanji Jackson is black, Sonia Sotomayor is Hispanic, Elena Kagan is Jewish. Sonia and Elena can pass as white. But only Ketanji and Sonia are eligible for minority set-asides.

Ketanji Jackson keeps the SCOTUS bench evenly divided between Harvard and Yale law grads, with four apiece. Amy Coney Barrett is the outsider, having been awarded her law degree by Notre Dame. No Ivy for Amy. More power to her.

Sweet Jesus! Left-wing radio just announced the “history-making milestone in American justice” as Ketanji Brown Jackson was sworn in. God forbid those racists should ever get over identity politics . . .
