17 May—The Whores of Hartford are at it again. Rather, they’re still at it. Remember the utterly stupid vote-buying Baby Bonds scheme the Democrat-infested Connecticut General Assembly passed a couple of years ago but Gov. Lamont—somewhat less fiscally irresponsible—wasn’t too happy about, so he was going to let it silently fade away? Well, it hasn’t faded away and is bound to haunt Connecticut taxpayers.
The General Assembly’s black and Puerto Rican caucus, most prominent among the self-serving Hartford whores in pushing the Baby Bonds boondoggle, had warned—make that threatened—last month that if the governor refused to let them have their way on this issue (and probably all that follow), it likely would lead to political gridlock on other fiscal issues.
So Lamont caved. And as things stand now, welfare babies born as of 1 July be given $3,200 that will miraculously grow to whatever it may be when they mature, so they can blow it on you-know-what. (But it can only be spent on the right stuff, you say. Like food stamps, now known as SNAP.)
Lamont’s stated objection had been that the $600 million—$50 million a year—vote-buying juggernaut was to be financed by bonding, which would have cost about (at least) $165 million over the next dozen years. Bonding for bonds—what a splendid idea!
But State Treasurer Erick Russell (an elected constitutional officer, unfortunately), who’s been behind the Baby Bonds from the get-go, came up with a brilliant compromise. No need at all to borrow the money. Connecticut’s coffers are flush, Erick assures us, overflowing with cold, hard cash just waiting to be wasted—rather, disbursed and dispersed to buy votes. So let’s just use what we’ve got. Nothing to worry about.
Great idea. Except it’s not. Certainly the state may at the moment be in minimally less dire financial straits than it had been a decade ago, but it’s still well over its figurative eyeballs in the fiscal cesspool and sinking ever deeper.
And rest assured that Connecticut taxpayers will be paying through the nose for the black and Puerto Rican caucus to buy votes and Erick Russell’s irresponsible bookkeeping . . .
