As expected, Democrats vs. guns

16 February—In their never-ending crusade to trash the constitutions of the United States and Connecticut and disarm the “people” of the U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment and “Every citizen” of Article First Section 15 of the Connecticut Constitution, the state’s Democrats have just come up with some new nonsense.

Gov. Ned Lamont’s latest gun-grab, according to the state website, is a “Comprehensive Package of Legislative Proposals on Gun Violence.” His Excellency “will introduce a comprehensive package of legislative proposals aimed at eliminating gun violence in Connecticut through a series of targeted initiatives, including the enhancement of efforts to stop the illegal flow of guns to the state, providing millions of dollars in additional funding to law enforcement to strengthen their work, and closing loopholes in gun safety laws, among others.”

First, in case you didn’t know, when Democrats go on about eliminating gun violence, they really mean eliminating guns. At least keeping guns out of the possession of law-abiding individuals.

Getting on, then, Ned’s targeted initiative includes reestablishing a “Gun Tracking Task Force to identify the source of illegal guns.” It’s clearly a fool’s errand that will just waste even more taxpayer money—starting with $2.5 million in American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) largess but is actually intended to provide more union jobs first and foremost.

Another initiative will create “a statewide community violence intervention program . . . by working with law enforcement, hospitals, and the people most at risk of perpetrating and experiencing violence.” According to the state website, “there is little statewide coordination and evaluation.” Doubtless, that’s true. But does anybody really expect things to change in the Land of Steady Habits? And just how will the program intervene in violence? Oh, by the way, the statewide strategy will be “supported” by a $3.5 million ARPA handout.

Is that the best those nitwits can do with their undeserved windfall?

Then there’s the initiative to “stop the flow of illegal “ghost guns.’” We all know what ghost guns are. Under the proposal, law-abiding ghost gun owners—those ghost guns predating 2019 were grandfathered—would be required to register them. So they could be confiscated, of course. In all events, the operative word is law-abiding. Would law-abiding people file off serial numbers, for instance? Slightly filing down the lands of a barrel after the firearm is discharged in a crime is more attractive. Shame on me for mentioning such a thing.

Ned also wants to be sure that “gun stores take their obligations seriously.” All firearms dealers take their obligations seriously. What Ned really wants is to require Federal Firearms Licensees to get Connecticut licenses, which don’t exist at present. The Connecticut dealers’ licenses are bound to cost far more than the FFLs, which cost $200 for the first triennium and $90 per triennium thereafter, and feed the state’s ravenous general fund.

Firearm carry laws would also be modified to allow police to request—make that demand—to see permits of people openly carrying firearms and to ban carrying in various places not currently verboten. Consider that permit production without probable cause is in direct violation of the U.S. Constitution’s Fourth Amendment. And banning carry anywhere at all is in direct violation of both federal and state constitutions. But the fed already does it with SCOTUS approval anyway.

The constitution trashers naturally want to “close loopholes in assault weapons laws.” So what else is new? They essentially intend to expand the already ludicrous definition of assault weapons so that eventually .22-caliber single-action revolvers and BB guns will be considered assault weapons.

If the Connecticut anti-gun crowd get their way, every firearm in the state would have a permanently jammed trigger lock and be stored in an unopenable safe. Clearly, the idea is for criminals and police to have unfettered access to firearms while the rest of us can go to hell. And we know the criminals won’t be locked up even if they’re caught by the police.

And let’s not forget that there’s a serious effort now underway to get the ruling party to create and fund an office of gun violence prevention and—even more ridiculous—declare gun violence a public health crisis. They’re still trying to do that with racism.

To end on a positive note, the good news is that Democrats down in D.C. aren’t cooperating with their figurehead president’s pleas and promises for gun control legislation. With midterm elections coming up and Republicans in the ascendant, the Democrats are telling Joe Biden where to go . . .
