And baby makes . . . a mint

23 August—It was reported the other day that a girl whose name doesn’t matter had to drop out of college in her freshman year and give up her “dream” of becoming a psychologist because she couldn’t afford it—“the cost of continuing her education became overwhelming,” as the Associated Press story put it. And “I knew I wasn’t going to finish, so I just had fun,” as the drop-out put it.

So the poor 25-year-old girl found herself back in Washington, D.C., still with student debt, mind you, working fast-food jobs, and “living largely on public assistance” with her boyfriend, his mother, and his nine-year-old daughter from “another relationship.” And evidently still having fun.

Because—wouldn’t you know it?—the fun-loving drop-out is pregnant. Maybe even by her current boyfriend. Not that it matters, of course. And she’s not worried anyway. She can thank a new welfare program called “Baby Bonds” for that. Baby Bonds is a taxpayer-financed trust fund for the indigent. No wonder the fun-loving drop-out sees a bright future for her son.

When her little bastard (unless the girl marries her boyfriend before the kid is born, of course) turns 18, he’ll receive “a large lump sum payment that can be used to pay for higher education, invest in a business, or make a down payment on a home,” according to the AP story. Or whatever else disadvantaged kids do with their trust funds. And that’s on top of all the other welfare the never-to-be psychologist and her fellow indigents will be forced to accept along the way. And just think of the taxpayer-bankrolled trust funds for all her other offspring, as yet unconceived but certainly conceivable.

The welfare state, it seems, encourages irresponsibility and promiscuity, among other social ills valued by politicians looking for easily bribable voters. Who needs abortion when you have welfare out the ying-yang?

At the moment, only the District of Columbia has actually initiated the Baby Bonds give-away. No surprise that the windfall’s proponents are eager to endow taxpayer-underwritten trust funds for the indigent at the federal level, i.e., in all the states. The idea, conceived over a decade ago, is to narrow the wealth gap (of course), primarily along racial lines (of course). It’s in large part the brainchild of New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker (who was himself born to parents who were indigent IBM executives) and other innovative, opportunistic Democrat politicians.

It’s not generally known that the shameless, irresponsible welfare-happy Democrat majority of the Connecticut General Assembly approved the first state-level trust fund for indigents last year. But just a few months ago, they and King Ned Lamont, obviously thinking of this year’s gubernatorial election, chose to delay the super-duper welfare free-for-all’s start by two years. That, the pandering Democrats reckon, will allow them to sneak it in under the noses of prudent taxpayers as the Democrats slaver-tongue the butts of their reliable base. And some readers wonder why I call these people whores whose primary interest is getting re-elected.

At the risk of sounding like a hard-hearted Republican, then, what the hell do “progressive” Democrats think they’re doing when they take from each according to his ability and give to each according to his needs. Oh, wait a minute. Isn’t that what Karl Marx suggested?
