Reader response

19 July—Luck was on the side of a disaffected reader this morning because, as I’ve learned I must do regularly, I just checked the sequestered junk email on the Altice Optimum website that didn’t make it to the Thunderbird email client, as it’s called. And I found among a week’s worth of demands for payment for totally phony bills, solicitations for companionship, various phishing scams, and other stuff that shouldn’t have been blocked this request: “Can you kindly remove me from your email list? Thank you.”

Of course I can. And I will. Kindly but not with pleasure. Kindly is a sort of nasty way of saying please when you’ve lost patience. And a proactive thank you is even nastier, thank you. Truth be told, though, I hadn’t been aware the disaffected reader had been on my email list. A Biden moment, perhaps, because I must have put her on it. Not that it matters, to be sure.

The disaffected reader doesn’t give a reason for her disaffection. But since her request was a reply to 17 July’s “Renaming the GOP” and she has had well-written hard-line Republican letters in other publications, it’s a pretty safe bet she wasn’t too happy with the story of the Republican Party’s new name, Trump.

Is it that the disaffected reader resented the disquisition’s thesis of the Republican Party’s being rechristened with the name of despicable con man Trump or that she couldn’t take messiah Trump’s giving his name to a bunch of Republican pols who would do anything to curry his favor simply to further their own political interests?

Or could it be that the reader wasn’t disaffected at all but simply wanted to be removed from the mailing list because she was afraid I’d sell what little information I had on her—just her name and email address, as it happens—to make a few bucks to keep The Monitor going? Domain names aren’t cheap, after all. Okay, they are.

Well, every dollar helps anyway, but the possibly disaffected reader (and other subscribers) needn’t worry. And even though she’ll no longer be getting the daily link she can still go to LitchfieldMonitor.com and click on the Daily Disquisition as most readers do. Probably.

So what do you think about Trump this week and last night? Is the former Republican Party Trump or is the former Republican Party Trump? Just as the media refer to X formerly known as Twitter, they’ll surely refer to Trump formerly known as Republicans . . .
