28 February—Jesus F.X. Christ with bells on! Yesterday, you’ll recall, I calmly commented on Penguin Random House’s politically correct woke-nazi bowdlerization of Roald Dahl’s children’s classics published by its Puffin imprint.
Today I’ll calmly note that Penguin Random House’s politically correct woke-nazi Portfolio imprint couldn’t wait to announce that it wouldn’t publish Scott Adams’s upcoming non-Dilbert title “Reframe Your Brain” and had scrubbed his backlist, including “How to Fail at Almost Everything and Still Win Big,” “Loserthink: How Untrained Brains Are Ruining America, and “Win Bigly.”
Sir Allen Lane, who co-founded Penguin Books, and Random House co-founder Bennet Cerf must be turning in their graves.
Beleaguered Scott Adams noted that his literary agent had “cancelled” him. Agents are all too often just fair-weather parasites. I don’t think Adams will miss his agent. And other parasites are probably contacting him already.
But Adams probably will miss his “Dilbert” syndicater and book publisher, Andrews McMeel Universal (AMU), which bills itself as “the world’s largest independent syndicate,” which it probably is. I have no doubt AMU will miss Adams, too, even though their stable includes lots of other ultra-popular profit centers, like “Peanuts,” “Garfield,” “Get Fuzzy,” and “Non Sequitur.”
(About half the comics in the Republican-American are AMU’s, if you’re wondering.)
I won’t speculate on AMU’s strategy in throwing Scott Adams overboard, but I think it was a rash, poorly considered business decision—as well as a shamefully anti-literary one—as Adams and “Dilbert” still have a huge, faithful following (not just of racists, by the way), which quite possibly will grow even bigger and more faithful, thanks to all the negative publicity.
The chairman (and co-founder of AMU) joined the CEO in proclaiming, “we will never support any commentary rooted in discrimination or hate.” That seems rather self-serving and hypocritical coming from the people who for decades have made very big bucks publishing that commentary.
It looks like there’s a growing literary backlash against Penguin Random House’s abuse of Roald Dahl, so Puffin has announced that it will continue to publish the original Dahl texts as well as the woke-nazified, politically corrected, bowdlerized versions for the overly sensitive. Clever but cowardly.
Will the cavalier mistreatment of Scott Adams foment a backlash? Will the anti-woke-nazi ball be in Elon Musk’s court?
