28 November—The good news today is that yesterday Connecticut’s junior U.S. senator Christopher Murphy, a dutiful Democrat whose main purpose in life is to deprive Americans of their clearly enumerated Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, publicly expressed doubt that a ban on erroneously labeled assault weapons could pass in the current lame-duck Senate.
Or the new Senate, for that matter, although the new Republican-majority House will tell the Senate where to get off on guns and lots of other things in all events. Not that there’s been any doubt about what Murphy doubts anyway.
And no kidding about Chris Murphy: virtually everything you read about him these days and most of the pictures you see of him have to do with his campaign against firearms.
Nancy Pelosi’s House of Representatives passed its breach of the Constitution in the summer by a close almost-party line vote, with two minority Republicans voting for it and five majority Democrats voting against it. The Senate hasn’t taken it up yet and it’s a virtual certainty it won’t.
Murphy doesn’t even think Senate Democrat Majority Leader Charles Schumer (of whom the less said, the better) can hustle all 50 Democrats to support the travesty. Given the ever-deteriorating Senate filibuster rules, of course, 60 votes are currently required for passage.
“Let’s see if we can try to get [as] close to 60 as possible,” Chris dreamed out loud. “If we don’t have the votes, then we’ll talk to Senator Schumer and maybe come back next year with maybe an additional senator and see if we can do better.” Maybe indeed. Chris needs to be reminded that one vote isn’t anywhere near the 10-plus he needs for his misguided quest.
President Joe Biden is carrying a pocketful of pens in his pants to sign the ill-conceived legislation without delay in the unlikely event it should pass. But even in the likelihood that incumbent Senator Rev. Raphael Warnock prevails over the idiot Herschel Walker in next week’s Georgia runoff, Michael Bloomberg would have to bribe a dozen Republican and conservative Democrat senators with at least $100 million apiece for the ill-conceived legislation to get anywhere. Republican and conservative Democrat senators don’t come cheap, but don’t put it past him.
Remember the mass stabbings in Saskatchewan in September? Ten dead, 15 injured. No firearms involved, just knives. Drive-by shootings in Nashville, New Haven, and Torrington, among others, more recently? You can’t have drive-by shootings without motor vehicles.
So don’t be surprised if Chris Murphy, Richie Blumenthal, and Joe Biden are hatching a plan to ban civilians from owning and using knives (including kitchen knives) and motor vehicles in their campaign to Make America Safe Again. Go MASA?
