7 February—Today’s screed will be short because it contains only good news. In no particular order.
In unambiguous albeit typically civil terms, former Vice President Mike Pence last week told former President Donald Trump where to get off. True, he first did it 6 January 2021 as President of the Senate, causing Trump’s storm-troopers to break in to the Capitol with a view to stringing him up as well as creating general mayhem. But as of last week, Pence’s excommunication from the embarrassing Trump-centric chicken-shit GOP in an effort to thwart his run for POTUS in 2024 looks more likely.
If Pence keeps his mouth shut about abortion, he might even stand a chance of getting elected over Biden. But first, of course, he’d have to get the GOP nomination. In all events, it’s time for the Never Trumpers to take back the GOP.
The value of Meta Platforms Inc. stock is still down well over $200 billion. Meta Platforms is the pretentious new name of Facebook’s holding company. (Like Eversource for Northeast Utilities.) It’s a useless, largely antisocial company that markets useless, largely antisocial products and it’s fantastic that it finally got its long-awaited comeuppance. If I had a bleeding pile, it would gush for Mark Zuckerberg, his henchmen, and MVRS’s (or FB’s, if the ticker symbol hasn’t been changed yet) shareholders.
I still can’t understand the popularity of internet social media nor the ridiculous share prices digital stocks command. And does anybody really pay attention to internet advertising?
A week ago the authorities in Norway rejected Anders Breivik’s parole application (Rewards of mass murder), ordering that the neo-Nazi killer of 77 people in Norway’s worst peacetime atrocity must stay in his resort-style prison—at least for five more years until his next parole hearing. Hopefully, in 2028 he’ll once again be deemed a threat to society.
Forty-three percent fewer (as opposed to less) viewers watched the Beijing Winter Olympics opening ceremony than had watched the one in PyeongChang, South Korea, in 2018. Wonderful. The People’s Republic of China and the International Olympic Committee deserve everything bad. All the world’s athletes should have boycotted the Olympics—and everything else—in China. And I don’t have any sympathy for Disney-owned NBC either.
And we all woke up this morning . . .
