2 February—The encouraging news is that 71 percent of the people who participated in this morning’s Republican-American poll would vote for Themis Klarides for U.S. senator while only 17 percent would vote for Richie Blumenthal. Let’s hope that as Rep-Am readers go, so goes the state.
On the other hand, Whoopi Goldberg was suspended for a fortnight by ABC News over what was obviously no more than a poorly expressed slip of the tongue. And Whoopi was commenting on “Maus,” a graphic novel that has itself been banned in various venues—some schools in Tennessee in this instance—for its eloquently brutal depiction of Nazi death camps during World War II.
What the hell is happening to this screwed-up country? Strict political correctness has taken over; you get the book thrown at you for no reason at all these days. ABC is a private company—it’s currently owned by the Walt Disney Company—so the Whoopi whopper isn’t a First Amendment matter.
And even if it were a matter of free speech being stifled by some governmental entity, you can no longer depend on the American Civil Liberties Union to even show an interest in the case if the speech offends anybody in any way. That’s right, the feisty old ACLU has become the picky and choosy strictly PC ACLU.
The ACLU has deteriorated into a mouthpiece for the woke left, a.k.a. self-styled progressives. No longer can it be counted on to defend or even support the constitutional rights of anyone its progressive management doesn’t agree with. Gone are the days when the ACLU proudly, fiercely, and defiantly defended the likes of Nazi and KKK marchers—not because the ACLU agreed with them, to be sure, but simply because the Constitution gave the disgusting buggers the right to demonstrate peacefully.
Even Ira Glasser, the ACLU’s executive director for 23 years, has lost patience with the group that had done him and us proud until fairly recently. Glasser’s successor, Anthony Romero, while increasing the group’s membership and bank balance, has, in simple terms, betrayed its fundamental values.
Suffice to say, the ACLU has lost my respect and support. Not that Romero cares. And I don’t even know if its Connecticut cell has bothered to acknowledge the yellow-ribbon controversy . . .
